Re-thinking Food Systems: The shift to regenerative agriculture

The global food system is a major driver of climate change, accounting for approximately 30% of human-produced greenhouse gas emissions and creating tonnes of food and plastic waste annually. Reforming the way we produce, transport and consume food is an urgent priority. In this event we hear from stakeholders across the food sector who are exploring ways to make our food systems more sustainable -- from regenerative agriculture to industry-wide collaborative action on waste reduction.

This event was broadcast on 17 October 2024 and is the fifth event in our "Regenerating our World" discussion series. About the series: Regenerating our world is a discussion series exploring the issues that underpin our transition to a just, sustainable future – from what it means to be an active “citizen” of place and planet, to how we create thriving and abundant food-systems now and into the future. This series is a collaboration between RSA Oceania, the RSA Sustainability Network and IdeaSpies.

Dr Ethan Gordon is a social scientist and post-doctoral researcher with Oregon State University, where he explores how values shape decision-making and environmental stewardship in regenerative ranching. He is also the President of the Institute of Ecological Agriculture, a co-operative of farmers, educators and consultants committed to regenerating Australia’s agricultural landscapes.

Rosie Bradshaw is a GHG specialist at the global environmental action NGO WRAP, working with government, academia, and organisations across the food and drink industry to reduce emissions. Her work has focused on unlocking the potential of data, including on WRAP's scope 3 protocols, providing practical, accessible guidance to scope 3 reporting, and the creation of a Food Sector Transition Plan in partnership with IGD and EY.
